"Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam" -- Dr. Maritn Luther King Jr. (repost)
Mon Jan 21, 2008 at 06:21:32 AM PDT
[A repost from two years ago to celebrate the holiday]
Speaking of hope, recently I have been drawn to several different Kossacks' signatures in search of that concept. Specifically ones dealing with a great modern orator, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
My own journey of hope led me to transcribe Dr. King's "Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam" and started with collecting those signatures. The signatures inspired me to continue looking. Then Al Gore spoke at WE Media and I downloaded that speech. I then re-discovered file sharing networks and ended where I started. I had discovered many of Dr. King's works. "Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam" stood out to me as the best of them all.
When looking for its transcription it is sometimes referenced as part II of "Beyond Vietnam". But when cross-referencing those two speeches, many sections were revised. Hence, "Why Oppose the War in Vietnam" is actually a different speech with many similarities. I can not find with certainty where or when "Why I Oppose..." was delivered but "Beyond Vietnam" won Dr. King a posthumous AMA and was delivered one year to the day of his death.
"[I] Want him terminated" --Jesus
Wed Feb 28, 2007 at 03:39:07 PM PDT
What??!!??!!
"Mr. Stanton is not a role model. He's proven that. I think for the sake of our young people today, you need to do what's right, and that's terminate him. ... If Jesus was here tonight, I can guarantee you he'd want him terminated. Make no mistake about it." - Ron Sanders, pastor, Lighthouse Baptist Church of Largo
Let me correct YOUR mistake.
I know Jesus would have condemned Pastor Ron's statement more than Steve Stanton.
Teachers Assoc. turns down 50K "An Inconvenient Truth" DVDs

Via Pharyngula and Think Progress, look at the lengths which oil companies will go to suprress the Global Warming debate.
This is a troubling development, and perhaps some members of the National Science Teachers Association in the readership here know something about it. They seem to be in the pocket of the oil industry.
In tomorrow’s Washington Post, global warming activist Laurie David writes about her effort to donate 50,000 free DVD copies of An Inconvenient Truth (which she co-produced) to the National Science Teachers Association. The Association refused to accept the DVDs:
Liebermany Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events
Wed Aug 09, 2006 at 09:33:14 AM PDT
The movie you are about to watch is extremely unpleasant.
In this story not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy beginning, and very few happy things in the middle.
This is because not very many happy things happened in the lives of the Connecticut voters when Count Josef was presiding over them.
Widely regarded as one of the most prominent politicians of his generation, Count Josef was a very hands-on guardian to the Connecticut voters. He repeatedly whisked them to safety, and was dedicated to making sure their inheritance was put to good use.

Signatures, Quotes and other Random-nalia

In 'My doucements' sits a little world file (5 pages) that I have been building since my time here at The Daily Kos. It's a collection of quotes that inspires, and enrages me at times and has completely come from you, the diarists and commentors.
More on my own signature: "Why quit our own to stand on foreign ground" -- G. Washington. I took this ever since reading it in alt.groups.bush over 5 years ago. I used to have to go there for news before I knew of Blogs. It's meaning has to deal with George Washington's view, that the U.S.'s imperiality and its roots as the pen-ultimate experiment of Democracy, shouldn't be crossed. I idolize those founding fathers, born of the enlightment, diests that shun the yoke of evangelicals, if only true men like that could be born today and be recognized as leaders... To end my ode to Washington, enjoy this bizarre hip-hop sketch video

Soldier Arrested, Sons Held Overnight
Sat Feb 25, 2006 at 10:02:03 AM PDT
We need help.
My cousin was arrested two nights ago. I diaried about his back-door draft a few months ago. We knew this day would come and we need more awarness of this.

My cousin has been staying with his two divorced parents, back and forth. I assume the MP MP/County Sheriff surveiled both houses. Two nights ago while staying with his Mother(my Aunt) and Step-dad, the MP County Sheriff showed up a 1AM. A few hours after his parents had left for work. He was home alone with his two sons, age 6 and 8. They were held in child protective services for a night. I can not imagine how frightened they were.
My Uncle(his father) picked the children up in the morning yesterday and has been trying to get his ducks in a line that day. Franticly, calling their military lawyer, getting media contacts, scouring email contacts. I was contacted late last night with his plea, to send this into the blogosphere. He has several contacts and wants more, Cindy Sheehan, OpTruth, Veterans for peace, etc.

It's Not Six, But Even More Ports.
Thu Feb 23, 2006 at 07:38:29 PM PDT
Portgate is exploding in front of King George but the
traditional media is still reporting only 6 cities.
New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia
In reality its now 7 cities (Update: Ed Schultz is reporting as many as 22 ports in this deal, this diary focuses on what I will call the 7th), add Tampa to the list, as of February 21st.
Tampa Port Authority commissioners [...] authorized port director Richard Wainio* to sign a contract to bring the British company [P&O] [...] to Tampa.
*Richard A. Wainio was appointed January 22, 2005 by Tampa Port Authority commissioners.
In a sleight of hand, the Bush administration, conveniently forgot to mention Tampa. For if CFIUS had to review the sale of the the initial 6, then it had to review 7th, if they review the deal at all, or have they been planning this since May 2005.

Would I be awarded Eagle Scout in this Day and Age?
Tue Feb 07, 2006 at 06:31:55 PM PDT
It's obvious to me looking back that the answer would lie in the hands of the many adults that ran my troop. They had much say in the first time I got Eagle. However, would I be awarded the Eagle Scout, would that opportunity still lie ahead of me? Would a different young man standing before my Eagle Review Board and Scoutmaster, with similar views of the world as myself, be treated as fairly as I? I ask because those adults were all wingnuts.
How do I know that? Well my father was the scoutmaster. My merit badge counsler a crotchety old marine. My troop chaplain a member of a church which I did not attend. My Community leader, now a proselytizing goon. And I'm sure they all think Karl Rove is a fine American, I know my father does.

Chief Justice Appoints All FISA Judges
Tue Dec 20, 2005 at 12:13:30 PM PDT
Cheif Justice Roberts questioned by Dewine on FISA Judge Appointments, (Dewine Knew!)
During Dewine's questioning of then Chief Justice Appointee John Roberts, Dewine pointedly asks Roberts about FISA.
"...a very important court, a court that meets in secret, a court that deals with the most important national security matters that we have, really, in our country, but also a court it deals with our precious civil liberties."
Though the focus was on the Roberts' answers, a clue of Snoopgate is within the questions, from Dewine.
DeWine pointed out that as Chief Justice Roberts would appoint the 11 judges on the FISA court, along with three judges on a FISA review panel that takes a second look at requests rejected by the 11-judge panel. emphasis added
Was this an exploratory view into Bush's wiretaps being rejected by the current FISA panel?
Was this an exploratory view into one of the Senators that was in the 'Know' of Snoopgate?
Was this an exploratory view of how Roberts' would circumvent the constitution for King Bush?
I thought my neighbor was a Flanders, turns out he has a pinch of Dobson too.
Mon Dec 12, 2005 at 12:54:28 PM PDT
[
The prelude]
I had always thought the Simpsons's Flanders character was the happy-go-lucky Christian. And in turn any Christians I would meet would be the happy-go-lucky type.
I first noticed Flanders at the open house we stopped at one Sunday Morning. He was sitting in a canvas chair on his front lawn reading. It was an odd feeling I had, that he was watching the potential buyers. His attention seemed not on his book but at me. Uncomfortable to a point that my gaydar pinged, due to his over-attention. I wrote the situation off for the day.
That open house was a success for me and my fiancee and we moved in three months ago. The first night we toasted wine with our realtor, who was an acquaintance, and hung out a little longer with our long time friend who was our mortgage broker. We then went to the apartment to get the big blankets, comforters, sleeping bags, pillows and shams. As we made our floor-mattress as comfortable as can be sans bed, we got our rest for the big move the next day.

SCI FRI: The Hurricane Cone: Understanding Spaghetti Models
Fri Oct 21, 2005 at 09:19:51 AM PDT
This is a hurricane diary, a Wilma diary and hopefully will shed some light into the magical 'cone' that the
National Hurricane Center displays around each hurricane track.
If you have had to experience the anticipation of a landfalling hurricane anywhere in the vicinity of your home, and noticed that you lived within the cone of predicted landfall. You know that you have to be prepared for that hurricane to hit you. But what is the cone? How much reliabilty can the cone have from the west-side to the east-side of the center line? The cone is the uncertainty of many spaghetti models with respective error.
First, a default disclaimer, the NHC runs the official track of each hurricane and that should be used to protect your life and property. Below is the white cone of potential 1-5 day track of Wilma, as of 4am Oct. 21.

::Lets dive into the meaning of the different spaghetti models (I can't claim to know much about them but at least I can share what I know and point to more information) below the fold::
Bush Loses Memory at Press Conference Today
Tue Oct 04, 2005 at 06:33:26 PM PDT
[
voiceover] Where are you? You're in some motel room. You just - you just wake up and you're in - in a motel room. There's the key. It feels like maybe it's just the first time you've been there, but perhaps you've been there for a week, three months. It's - it's kind of hard to say. I don't - I don't know. It's just an anonymous room.

Blaming Environmentalists For Katrina: What You Should Know!
Tue Sep 20, 2005 at 11:28:36 AM PDT
This is from the
Sierra Club's site, we have all heard about the Republican attempt to smear the 'enviros' for the levees breaking.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Bush administration has faced significant criticism due to failures preparing for and responding to the catastrophe that hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region. Now the administration's emissaries are trying to deflect that criticism by blaming environmentalists. As they say in Louisiana, that dog won't hunt.

Ed Helm for Mayor of St. Petersburg
Sun Sep 18, 2005 at 05:01:51 PM PDT
As a strong supporter of Dean's 50 state strategy at all levels, today when I was contacted by an organizor for Ed Helm's mayoral campaingn to attend a meeting today, I jumped at the opportunity to help.
Ed Helm hasn't been getting the best of press. And I was unsure of the candidate I would meet today. But after the meeting I am convinced that I just met the new Mayor of St. Petersburg. Ed's struggle will be an uphill one, his incumbent is Rick Baker, and Baker has strong ties with the Bushes, he even hosted a huge campaign event in St. Pete from him.
I would like to go over the meeting I just attended and introduce you too, to the next Mayor of St. Petersburg, Ed Helm.
