Ask George Allen

Tue Oct 31, 2006 at 03:53:03 PM PDT

I live in Virginia, and George Allen is one of my Senators. I've been calling his office for the last two or three years, asking questions on things that are important to me, like accountability, transparency, and integrity in our government.

George Allen doesn't like to answer questions. His staffer will take your contact info, and promise that someone will get you an answer, but (if you've had luck like mine) the answers never come.

So, here's the deal:

FMA: Five-Minute Activism

Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 04:01:07 AM PDT

Congress.org is a great online resource that makes it super-easy to get in touch with your representatives in Congress. There is also a mailing list you can sign up for to receive updates on current issues being discussed or debated in Congress, with resources for informing yourself on the issues and then informing your members of the House and Senate about your opinion.

Today I got an email about the Senate's debate of the Federal Marriage Amendment this week. According to the email, 60 percent of respondents have written their representatives in support of the FMA. That's up from 58 percent last night, so supporters are definitely writing.

If you can take five minutes this morning, help swing the pendulum back; info (with links!) below the fold.

An end to welfare! (and: Trickle Up)

Mon May 08, 2006 at 05:05:39 PM PDT

If conservatives are so staunchly behind tax cuts, on the theory that more money in the hands of the people stimulates the economy, and so dead-set against welfare, because it sucks money away from people who actually work to those who don't (and often can't), then I have the perfect solution:

It's our accountability moment, too

Thu Aug 11, 2005 at 03:54:44 PM PDT

Taking back our democracy will involve more than simply defeating the GOP.

Armando  posted this diary about a Rolling Stone article on the deep-seated culture of self-indulgent corruption in government, which I think lies at the heart of all of our problems today.  The line above, in a later comment, caught my attention and I wanted to share a few thoughts.

I'd just been reading Cindy Sheehan's article about how this is Bush's accountability moment, but after reading the RS article as well it just highlights to me about how this is our accountability moment, too.

I've thought off and on that, in a way, it's a mistake to make everything about one particular person or a group of specific people.  That they're doing these things is not the problem so much as it is that our system allows itself to be exploited this way; the system itself has become corrupted.  I believe it can be fixed, but it won't happen overnight, or on its own.

Partisan Politics, Lies, and Treason (i wrote a letter)

Thu Jun 23, 2005 at 12:56:03 PM PDT

Just sent this letter off to my representatives in Congress. Senator Allen (R-VA), Senator Warner (R-VA), Representative Moran (D-VA) and President Bush (or their staff members) will soon be getting an eyeful, because they hadn't heard from me in a while and I thought it was time I checked in.  The title of this diary (minus the parenthetical statement) was the subject line of the message.

I ended up writing and sending this because when I called them all earlier today I was so furious over today's news (including Karl Rove's obnoxious tongue-wagging) that I couldn't collect my thoughts as coherently as I'd planned.

I Spoke In Support of the Filibuster!

Wed Apr 27, 2005 at 04:47:51 PM PDT

Thanks to Orrin Hatch and Elizabeth Dole, I decided at the last minute to go to a MoveOn.org rally opposing the Republicans' plans to end the filibuster for judicial nominees.  It was my first time ever attending a political rally, much less speaking at one, but these people have me so hopping mad with what's going on I felt it was time to step up.  I even dragged a co-worker along with me!

It was a small rally in Arlington, VA, but it went really well and we even had people trickling in over the course of the thing.  The rally was held in front of the Arlington County government offices, and we ended by marching the block to the Arlington County Courthouse to wave our signs and chant about keeping the judicial filibuster intact.

rallies today: support the judicial filibuster!

Wed Apr 27, 2005 at 09:34:25 AM PDT

The GOP leadership just can't stand to not get one hundred percent of everything they want, all the time. Anyone who disagrees with them in any way is cast as obstructionist and standing in the way of tradition.

Funny how quickly they forget how handy these tools were for them when they were the "embattled" minority.

i'm mad as hell

Tue Apr 26, 2005 at 12:42:25 PM PDT

And definitely not gonna take it any more.  All the reading I've been doing here and elsewhere about the "nuclear option," concerning both the rules change itself and the conservative attempts to recast the label as a Democrat invention, have really got me going.  I posted a long entry about this mess in my LiveJournal (cobbling together multiple Daily Kos diaries and a few other things), and just a few minutes ago sent the following email (located below the fold) to Senator Frist via the nifty contact page at Congress.org.

Day One

Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 07:17:21 AM PDT

We always knew that, no matter who won, today would be Day One.  It was always true that we would still have a lot of work ahead of us once the election was over; if a Bush win is validated, it's just more work than we were hoping for.

The only thing that's over is the election, there's still a lot of democracy ahead of us that needs sorting out.  Even though votes are still being disputed, we need to focus now on the work that we always knew was waiting for us after the election was over.

"wake up and smell the fascism"

Wed Oct 27, 2004 at 11:51:49 AM PDT

A friend of mine forwarded me this link to the Old American Century website.  Did a quick search here at kos and didn't see a previous mention, so here goes:

In his article Fascism, Anyone?, political scientist Dr. Lawrence Brit identifies fourteen characteristics common to fascist regimes.  At this page, each of the fourteen is presented as topic headers, with links to news and other articles demonstrating how the Bushies and other Rabid Righties (including provocateur hack Ann Coulter) adhere obsessively to one or more of them.

Anybody else seen this?  I thought it was an interesting way to present their actions in context, and plan to forward it to a bunch of my friends.  The original article is posted at the Council for Secular Humanism website; not sure what their deal is but the name alone is probably grounds for immediate dismissal by Conservative Christians and other Fundies.

Anyway, thought it might be of interest to folks here.  I'm still paging through it, myself.  You can also download a .pdf flyer with an overview of the fourteen characteristics for sharing with friends (and others).  Enjoy!
