Rules Committee, Please don't dis-enfranchise me (again)

Fri May 30, 2008 at 05:24:07 PM PDT

I have a slightly different take on this whole Florida Primary delegate seating issue than what I've been hearing in the news and in the forums. I was not happy when I found out Florida's January Democratic Primary would not count. For Florida, there would be no campaigning, no chance to get to know the candidates, no organizing on the local level, and perhaps worse of all, no voice in who gets to be our Democratic nominee.

At the time we were told in no uncertain terms by Democratic party leadership and by the candidates themselves that Florida was off limits and the votes would not be counted no matter what. Many people I talked to just decided to stay home, if their vote wouldn't count, why bother.

I thought about whether to vote in the primary long and hard. I felt at the time the National Democratic Party was making a big mistake by dis-enfranchising the people of Florida, dis-enfranchising me, and I was mad. But again, this was Florida where voting fraud and errors is part of our past. So perhaps it was to be expected.

A path to recovery for America (with poll)

Fri May 23, 2008 at 11:46:37 AM PDT

There is talk about all the speculators in the housing market. Investors buying a house or condo with the intention to flip it and turn a profit when as the market continued to rise. One investor profiting on another, it was a house of cards doomed to fall. Luckily, the families affected by the housing market are still a minority of the economy.

The other speculator market that's really hurting the average American family is that of oil. Sur,e there are some market forces that explain rising gas prices; but the very real fear of a short supply of oil in the future has driven up the cost. The weak dollar compounds the problem and now we're seeing $4.00 gasoline.

These forces are mostly out of our control. Who we elect and what kind of economic policy has some effect, but the supply of oil and the growing demand for it is very real.

But the truth is we've all been speculators in the oil market for the last 40 years. We've been speculating that gas prices would stay low and the urban planning and mass transit system we should have been investing in all along would never be needed.

We couldn't have been more wrong.

George Bush is a Pirate King. Don't give him your Stimulus Check

Wed May 07, 2008 at 07:25:50 AM PDT

Jon Nadleberg has a great analogy that directly links the actions of George Bush with those of the very real Pirate Captains Walt Disney based his famous attraction on.

Not too many people are aware of the background of the auction section of Pirates of the Caribbean. In this scene, the captain of the ship has gathered the women of the town together and is selling them off to the crew of the pirate ship.

This is based on what actually used to happen with clever sea captains. Back then, the captain would get an equal share of the loot stolen from the city as just another member of the crew. In this manner all would seem fair to the crew who only followed the captain so long as the captain did right by them.

That's a pretty good analogy for democracy, btw. It's well past time for us to find a new captain.

Goodbye and good riddance to Karl Rove

Mon Aug 13, 2007 at 12:58:54 PM PDT

Goodbye, good riddance

Three simple words from John Edwards sums up what millions of Americans are feeling right now. "Goodbye, good riddance" is the sum total of John Edwards statement regarding the resignation of Karl Rove. His economy of words tells a lot.

Aside from any future criminal or investigative proceedings against the man, can we now just move on and realize that the Bush Whitehouse is completely and totally irrelevant. Even his biggest supporters are jumping ship.

If Al Gore won't run... (with poll)

Tue Jul 03, 2007 at 10:23:33 AM PDT

What happens when Al Gore sticks to his guns and stays out of campaign politics? He won't run for President as he's making a world of difference as a private citizen and doesn't want that to stop if he gets himself elected into office. All those pent up dollars people have been waiting to donate to his campaign; all the volunteer hours from the 'Draft Al Gore' movement; all the great thinkers, blog roots specialists, environmental activists? All those people waiting to crash the gate with Al... what happens to all that?

*our* civil war

Sat Jan 13, 2007 at 11:48:22 AM PDT

What do you say to people who say, "well we're there now. So what would you have us do? Leave and abandon our mess or stay and try a surge to clean it up?" Here's my attempt.

While I know we should never have started this war to begin with (many political and economic avenues remained), we are there right now never the less. For the last four years we, as a nation, have asked the working poor and those unable to afford a college education without military service, and their families to make all the sacrifices for us (including over 3000 cases of the biggest sacrifice anyone can make). There has been no rationing, no tax increase, and heaven forbid we all give up our gas guzzlers. Meanwhile we have sacrificed privacy, free speech, and habeas corpus rights, but of course if you already have money and power that doesn't concern you.

When will we be wise enough for self rule?

Wed Jun 28, 2006 at 08:33:29 AM PDT

"Anarchism is founded on the observation that since few men are wise enough to rule themselves, even fewer are wise enough to rule others." - Edward Abbey

I'm an idealist when it comes to philosophy, but a realist when it comes to government. This means in a utopian world, I would be fine and dandy with Libertarian or even Anarchism as the mode of government (or lack thereof). However, I firmly believe the above quote is correct and that few men are wise enough to rule themselves. Therefore, they can't be trusted to be a part of a society without rules.

America's Global Reputation Destroying US Tourism Industry (poll!)

Wed Jun 14, 2006 at 07:26:04 AM PDT

In yet another failed attempt at competence by the Republicans running the United States, our reputation with the world is so tarnished that we can no longer attract tourists to visit. So says the recently released Pew Global Attitudes Study.

A year ago, anti-Americanism had shown some signs of abating, in part because of the positive feelings generated by U.S. aid for tsunami victims in Indonesia and elsewhere. But favorable opinions of the United States have fallen in most of the 15 countries surveyed. Only about a quarter of the Spanish public (23%) expresses positive views of the U.S., down from 41% last year; America's image also has declined significantly in India (from 71% to 56%) and Indonesia (from 38% to 30%).

What Busby's loss means

Wed Jun 07, 2006 at 07:41:52 AM PDT

Yesterday's election sent some strong signals. But I'm not getting the same signals others on this board appear to be. I see Busby's loss in CA-50 as a sign that Democrats still have some work to do to convince Republican voters that voting the party line isn't their only option. That test still remains for Tester.

Class War: A Taxation System we can live with

Sun Jan 29, 2006 at 03:20:56 PM PDT

One of the problems with getting out of this cycle of tax breaks for the rich and increased living expenses for the poor, is that now that it is easier to locate company resources overseas or even just pick up and move a whole company, corporations hold our economy hostage.

As my liberatarian brothers like to remind me, there is no such thing as a tax on a company. Those increased costs just get passed onto consumers.

The solution to this is to stop taxing corporations based on what they sell and instead tax them on what they consume. This changes where taxes get factored into the production line and encourages companies to produce more effectively, keeping costs low, and passing those savings onto the consumer.

More below based on Dave Pollard's excellent blog - How to Save The World.

Hurricane Katrina: How one woman made a difference

Wed Jan 18, 2006 at 08:25:43 AM PDT

I just stumbled upon this blogspot diary while doing a random search through recently created weblogs and I just had to get the word out. It tells the story of one woman, Rhonda Honegger, from Williamsburg, Virginia, who knew she couldn't wait for others to make a difference in the lives of children whose lives were changed forever by Hurricane Katrina.

I am a business woman, wife, & mother of 2. I felt helpless after Hurricane Katrina in part because my sister and her 3 adult children lived in New Orleans and were devastated by the storm. I decided not to sit back and wait for others but to take the initiative to help and created Operation Colonial Friends. Over $9100 in change was collected at 3 Williamsburg schools and along with a grant from Gametime, and the support of many businesses, we were able to build a new playground for Waveland Elementary on 7 January 2006.

Rhonda is chronicling her journey at her blog and it's a must read.

Third Party is not a Zero Sum Game (w/ Poll)

Fri Jan 13, 2006 at 06:25:02 PM PDT

I am this far (holds thumb and index finger about a quarter of an inch apart) from throwing in the towel. I think that the abandonment by the Democrats in the Senate of their constitutional duty to oppose tyranny (unitary executive, just for starters) and not filibustering until real change occurs at the highest levels of the government will be the last straw. Alito's elevation to the highest court will be an offense that cannot be forgiven. The 30-40 years of his ultra conservative rulings will put America on a path to permanent tyranny.

So what is the answer? If we are abandoned by the current Democratic party, then we must in turn abandon them.

Collision: Animated Politics

Sun Dec 18, 2005 at 12:13:19 PM PDT

Max Hattler has posted his animated film Collision on the net. It's a mix of Islamic patterns and American quilts and the colors and geometry of flags as an abstract field of reflection. The result is a funky poltically charged experience that will leave you thinking.

The Pending Economic Collapse: Linking Kidney Stones to Corporate Failure

Tue Sep 27, 2005 at 11:50:52 AM PDT

Jaron Lanier (Wikipedia ) is mostly known for his dreadlocks and technological inventions. He has recently been chosen as one of the world's top 100 public intellectuals by The Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines and has a new post up at the Huffington Post. In it he brings a new perspective to many of our nation's problems... blame it on 'The Hand'.

In Katrina's Wake: A community comes together to Marry two who lost all.

Sat Sep 17, 2005 at 01:02:09 PM PDT

There have been many tragic stories of loss, struggle, and hopelessness in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. But there are glimmers of hope begining to shine through the cloudy skies. Here's one I read that is occuring just down the road from where I live.

Editorial: Hopelessness

Fri Sep 16, 2005 at 07:10:16 AM PDT

Last night Bush spoke in platitudes only. He spoke of 'hard work' although he's never done a day of hard work in his life. His whole operation is self-preservation and cronyism. This is further evidenced by his appointment of Karl Rove, the head crony, to lead the reconstruction effort. This upsets me to no end. But there is little that can be done about it because, as they say, to the victor go the spoils.

Rape, Beatings, Murder at the Astrodome... you read that right

Wed Sep 07, 2005 at 04:35:09 PM PDT

Over on BoingBoing.net there's a IM session that has been posted with a blogging reporter who has access to the Astrodome and the people inside.

12:29 Evacuee Irvin Skinner: We have a curfew. We're being kept inside after 11pm. Forced to stay inside. They threw guns on everyone. Said 'come inside or your out of here'. Shoved guns, pointed them at adults. I'm a grown man, I have rights. This is an instituion to us, it's like a jail. I'm a middle class man with a home being trated like a criminal because I'm black. If we were white, we wouldn't have this problem."

"We are not here by choice."

Where is ABC News? (now with Poll!)

Tue Sep 06, 2005 at 10:34:28 AM PDT

You know. I can't help but wonder what Peter Jennings would make of this mess. So far the word from ABC has been mostly silence. Robin Roberts from GMA went home to Mississippi for a few days, a few Nightline episodes have been cutting (they almost always are). But there has been no wall-to-wall coverage by the ABC news crew. Has Disney decimated their news budget or is Jennings loss still too much for them to recover from.

I miss the voice and insight of Jennings. No one has yet stepped up to replace him.
